Galway can at last celebrate their first win of the 2024 league campaign after an impressive performance against a strong Meath team in Ballinasloe this afternoon. Opening exchanges saw both teams kick wides or have attacks snuffled out before Shauna Hynes opened Galway’s account with the first point. Roisin Leonard then added a further 3 points, including 2 of her trademark off the ground frees, for the home team. Meath’s first score was a point from Emma Duggan, their stand out player. In response Galway attacked the Meath goal with Ailbhe Davoren’s first shot being saved by Monica McGuirk before Shauna Hynes netted the rebound to make the score 1-4 to 0-1. Shauna then took another point from play before Meath got their 2nd point. Galway continued then to dominate play for the rest of the first half with points being added by Nicola Ward, in the midst of an impressive full match return for Galway, Shauna Hynes, a mighty point from Leanne Coen and another expertly pointed free from Roisin, making the score at halftime Galway 1-9 Meath 0-2.
As one could expect, Meath began the second half with serious intent, Emma Duggan scoring a point from play and another from a free. The pressure was briefly relieved for Galway by Olivia Divilly getting a beautiful point against the run of play. Meath kept up the pressure on the Galway goal with Emma Duggan scoring 2 points in succession, the second of which was from a free. Time and again, however, Galway’s defence made crucial tackles or interventions with Eimile Gavin, Sarah Ni Loingsigh, Kate Geraghty and Nicola Ward all showing significant mettle. Emma Duggan struck a close in free going for goal which thankfully was deflected out for a 45 by Dearbhla Gower. We weren’t going to let this game slip from our grasp anyways. Shauna Hynes made the most of a breakout from the Galway half scoring a fisted point. Again Meath attacked and Dearbhla Gower made a significant goal preventing save. Further Meath pressure was rebuffed with Shauna Hynes scoring a further point for Galway in her worthy of Player of the Match performance. The final score in the game was a further Meath point from Emma Duggan, making the final score Galway 1-12 Meath 0-7. With this first win on the board Galway can now go into the last two league games with some hope they can escape relegation. Come out to support them in their next crucial home match vs Waterford on St Patrick’s bank holiday weekend.
